Here’s a quick look at some of our work in 2018:
- We organised two workshops:
- With NICEATM, we co-organised a workshop on replacing the use of rabbits in pyrogen testing for medical device extracts (a workshop report will be submitted early next year).
- We were on the planning committee for a NICEATM and International Alliance for Biological Standardization workshop on implementing non-animal approaches to vaccine testing.
- We organised three multi-part webinar series:
- We published five papers and have submitted one other:

- Hilton G, Odenkirchen E, Panger M, Waleko G, Lowit A, Clippinger AJ. A retrospective review: Evaluation of the avian acute oral and sub-acute dietary toxicity test for pesticide registration. Submitted.
- As members of the International Council on Animal Protection in OECD Programmes (ICAPO), we collaborated with the European Commission and United States to update OECD guidance document 23 on aqueous-phase aquatic toxicity testing of difficult-to-test chemicals.
- We guest-edited one journal special issue on inhalation toxicity testing.
- We attended and chaired several sessions at scientific conferences and presented more than two dozen posters and oral presentations.
- We held in-person meetings with multiple regulatory agencies and companies.
- We organised two free in-person training sessions on in vitro methods for regulatory agencies in the US and Taiwan.
- We’re developing three adverse outcome pathways related to respiratory toxicity, including one for pulmonary fibrosis.
Looking towards next year, we are excited to continue and complete various current projects and to start new ones. Big items for next year include tackling carcinogenicity testing, eye irritation testing of agrochemical formulations, antitoxin production, feeding studies for genetically modified organisms, and inhalation testing.
